From the Field: Aug. 6 PM Practice

Posted by Taylor Price on August 6, 2010 – 4:09 PM

It’s 4:00 p.m. and the players are out on the field stretching before the start of a special teams-only practice.

Pads are not being worn, players are in shells (jerseys, helmets and shorts).

I’ll pass along a couple of observations from the sidelines as we go along.

Kickoff return is first up and Ted Ginn Jr. is first to field them. Rookie wideout Kyle Williams is up next. Then, rookie cornerback LeRoy Vann and wide receiver Dominique Zeigler.

Meanwhile, Vernon Davis works on catching passes one-handed from assistant athletic trainer Nate Breske. Davis always does this during special teams periods. He’s always working.

Not a bad days work for the offensive line. As soon as kickoff return concluded the linemen headed to the locker room with Coach Solari and Coach Brown to watch film (I assume).

Focus on the field has switched to punt team, specifically interior blocking by the punt team.

On the field behind me, Davis continues to catch passes, but now he’s catching them on the move.

Patrick Willis is taking part in punt team drills and enjoying himself to say the least. He just chased Vann from behind, trying to strip the ball the entire time.

Certainly Willis doesn’t need to take part in special teams, but he wants to.

“On gameday only so many people dress out and you never know if a situation comes up where you’re called upon,” Willis said. “I just want to make sure I’m ready.”

As much as Willis plays the game with unbridled passion, restricting that love of the game is tough on him. That’s why he’s participates in practice as much as he can.

“I want to be a jack-of-all trades and master as much as I can,” Willis added. “The only way I can do that is to help out with special teams and get better at it.”

Here are pictures from the afternoon session:

Here’s Davis working on his hands off to the side.

Proof that Chilo Rachal is feeling much better since dehydration knocked him out of a couple of practices early in the week.

Here’s Coach Singletary addressing the team at the end of practice.
