49ers Arrive in Monterey

Posted by Taylor Price on August 5, 2010 – 10:18 AM

SEASIDE, Calif. – We’ve just arrived on the campus of Cal-State Monterey and the players are getting ready for practice. It’s much cooler down here and the field looks to be in great shape. There’s even red stripes painted to replicate the nutcracker drills back in Santa Clara.

Practice was pushed back to a 10:15 a.m. PT start time. Players are getting taped up outside and a couple are already out on the field warming up.

I’ll post a couple of updates as we go and we’ll have more from practice later in the day on 49ers.com.

The next time the 49ers will be on a soccer pitch will be on Halloween when they face the Broncos in London.

Stretching is over and as part of team tradition, it’s Kyle Williams’ turn to break the team down. Each rookie is responsible for leading a chant.

Team opens up practice working on ball security drills. Now they are working on form tackling. Emphasis on fundamentals continue at camp.

Chilo Rachal is back at practice after taking yesterday off (dehydration).

Nutcracker drills now taking place. Rachal looks like his old self.

Special teams period focuses on kickoff return. Ted Ginn, Kyle Williams, Dominique Zeigler and LeRoy Vann are back fielding kicks.

Linebacker Scott McKillop did not travel with the team. He’s getting an MRI on the knee he injured in Wednesday’s afternoon practice. The club should know more about his status this evening.

First play of 9-on-7 drills, rookie guard Mike Iupati does a nice job of picking up a blitzing Takeo Spikes.

Team period begins with a couple of sloppy plays, but offense rebounds immediately. Smith once again finds Vernon Davis deep down the field past the coverage of linebacker Matt Wilhelm.

Ginn makes nice over-the-middle grab during 7-on-7 work in front of Dashon Goldson.

A David Carr pass intended for Ginn was picked off by cornerback Shawntae Spencer who made an impressive catch. It’s Spencer’s second interception of camp so far, tying him with Goldson for team lead.

Glen Coffee showed nice burst on an inside draw. The 17 pounds he’s added this offseason don’t appear to be slowing him down. Next play, Coffee picks up blitzing cornerback Philip Adams with a nice thud. Perhaps his pass protection has benefited with added weight too.

That’s it for practice. We’ll have more coverage on 49ers.com later today. But first, enjoy photos from the practice session.

Quarterbacks and receivers ran routes in 50-degree weather, a major change from the normal weather in Santa Clara.

Rookie tackle Anthony Davis blocks LB Diyral Briggs in a one-on-one pass rushing drill.

Coach Singletary addressed a large media contingent after the conclusion of practice.
