Free Agent LaBoy Visits 49ers

Posted by Taylor Price on April 14, 2010 – 1:57 PM

Travis LaBoy, a former standout athlete from nearby Marin Catholic High School, visited with 49ers officials on Wednesday for the second time this offseason. The 6-foot-3, 261-pound outside linebacker missed all of last season with torn tendons in his foot, but is now back to 100 percent.

LaBoy has been running full-speed for the past four months, gradually picking up his workout regiment along the way.

“Now I don’t really think about it that much,” he said while speaking with beat reporters at 49ers headquarters.

LaBoy has interest from several teams, but would like to stay close to home, with friends and family close by. LaBoy thought he could be selected by the 49ers in the 2004 NFL Draft, but the club elected to not select the pass-rusher out of the University of Hawaii.

Instead, he was selected 42nd overall by the Tennessee Titans. Four seasons later, LaBoy signed with the Arizona Cardinals, where he was able to compete against his beloved childhood team.

“Not getting drafted by the Niners in ’04, I was mad. So when I played them I tried to really destroy them. I was kind of mad after the fact,” LaBoy admitted. “It wasn’t an issue of disrespect, I love the Niners. It was more of I was mad that they never brought me on board because it was my childhood team. But I’d love to be a part of it. The red and gold, that’s where it’s at.”

we do need anoutside linebacker, I have watched him play he would be a good pick up.

Except for the fact that our defense is good… the offense just can’t keep them off the field enough, so they get tired, and beat up. We need DE’s, and OLine people… We’ve got great offensive weapons, a solid defense. There’s no need to get ANOTHER person who we’re not going to use much *COUGH COUGH CARR*

Could be a good pick up and upgrade. May make someone else expendible.

hey Jake. Solid backup players are helpful in ALL positions. You never know whats gonna happen in a season, and depth is a key component to a championship team. Same goes for LaBoy

the niners organization doesnt want a superbowl…..if they did wewould have never signed carr…..they should have signed b.marshall,an mcnabb……our d is solid, we can use 2 more db’s from the draft ….with those 2 added to our offense,we will be on our way 2 the sb

LaBoy would be a sound pickup. Not only would he come at a cheap price but if healthy he can help push for the starting job. Laboy and Lawson have played the same amount of seasons and LaBoys stats are better in comparison, with fewer starts.

This would be a great pickup, now we can focus on OL and a receiver in the 1st round, Defense and RB in 2nd and 3rd. Pick up lefevour in the 4th

  14. By Jake on Apr 15, 2010 | Reply

I agree it’s not a BAD pickup, however, we DO have depth at the LB position. Granted, we don’t have a marquee pass rusher, but with the pick up of a good DB, and an OT in the Draft, we have more than a chance. Without a pass rusher, or by developing our current talent INTO a pass rusher we’ll be fine. We have more than enough LB’s with more than enough talent to make the adjustment.

do it, would be a great addition no doubt. #13 pick- Offensive lineman & #17 try to trade down, not to low. Like no lower than #25 & p/u DE that can drive the QB crazy all day, not available, p/u best player available. That pick, could be a mid 2nd pick or early 3rd & late 4th.Go Niners!

By the way Bulger, would not been a better p/u, reason, way too many concussions!

Travis LaBoy would be a great fit for the 49ers and they should sign and lock him up. We need all the help we need..

This guy can flat out rush the passer on the edge something that manny has problems with and since the niners have the studs in the middle playing well abu and big isaac laboy’s teammate at Hawaii this is a no brainer and now an ex cardinal who’s also played in the same conference already against NFC west teams , quickly act on this coach, like the dolphins, skins , and jets make this move.

we have a good pass rusher in ahmad brooks

im tired of sitting back and watching this team sign mediocre talent. they bring in these no name players that no one has ever heard of and let the star free agents sign with other teams. this year is the perfect year for the niners to make a serious run at our division and they’re sitting back and hoping we become a playoff team thru the draft. aren’t the players in the draft called rookies. who knows what they will due in the nfl. 9ers, for crying out loud, sign some real talent so us fans dont have to live thru this torture anymore. we are so close.

  20. By christian on Apr 16, 2010 | Reply

We should pick him up cuz we also need to work on our pass rush. He looks like he really wants to play with us>

I watched Travis play in college here in Hawaii. He excelled and was the leader of the defense. He is relentless. I’ve followed him throughout his time with the Titans and Cards and have witnessed his growth. He is now more versatile and is a good pass rusher. He’ll make plays. Being a local product is a major plus.

He would continue a tradition of Hawaii players on the Niners such as:

    Dana McClemore
    Jesse Sapolu
    Jeff Ulbrich
    Isaac Sapoaga
Russ Francis (from Hawaii but not UH)

  24. By kyle on Apr 17, 2010 | Reply

the problem is anytime someone with talent shows intrest in us we turn outr heads(peppers) what happened there? Quarter backs changing hands all over the league. we get carr why?

  25. By richard mariucci on Apr 19, 2010 | Reply

The niners are going to be set this year with a strong draft coming. A better addition at qb, and kick returner/receiver. lets get a guard to protect the qb, safety, the rb from cal, and leboy for defense.

  26. By niner4life on Apr 21, 2010 | Reply

ALL U FANS NEED TO LOOK AT WHAT THE NINERS HAVE NOW ONLY A FEW POSITION NEED TO BE FILLED AND WE WILL BE OFF AND RUNNING WE HAVE REALLY GOOD PLAYERS AND FINALLY A SOLID OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR NOW EVERYTHING SHOULD FALL INTO PLACE IF ANY OF U KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT FOOTBALL U SHOULD SEE WHAT THEY ARE DOING SAVING MONEY AND GETTING YOUNG TALENT LOOK AT THIS SEASONS SCHEDULE WE SHOULD GO AT LEAST 12-4 IF WE PLAY TO OUR POTENTIAL YES CARR WAS NOT A GOOD SELECTION BUT HE IS A VET AND HE WAS CHEAP. Hey Niners fans, Keep ours eyes on Leroy Vann CB/KR out of FAMU. I watched him last season and he was Mr. Excitement!!!! He ran two punts back for touches back to back for 68 yards or more in one game. He ran two punts for touches back to back again the following week. He is a MEAC product!!
