2010 Scouting Combine: Wednesday

Posted by Scott Kegley on February 24, 2010 – 2:41 PM

Taylor Price and I just arrived at our hotel in Indianapolis.  It’s always difficult at any city to get set up on the hotel’s internet, but we’re both up and running now.  It was about 20 degrees when we arrived at Indy after having a brief layover in Denver.

Media availability won’t start until tomorrow, when the offensive linemen, specialists and tight ends will stop by the media center.  Here’s a brief overview of the media schedule for the next few days:

Thursday: Offensive Linemen, Kickers, Punters, Long Snappers, Tight Ends

Friday: Quarterbacks, Running Backs, Wide Receivers

Saturday: Defensive Linemen, Linebackers

Sunday: Defensive Backs

As I mentioned in yesterday’s blog, Scot McCloughan and Mike Singletary will both address the media tomorrow as well appear as guests on SIRIUS NFL Radio.  Singletary is also tentatively scheduled to be on NFL Network around 2:30 ET.  If there are any prospects that you may have a particular interest in, leave those comments below and we’ll see what we can do.

We’ll be heading back to the Bay Area on Monday since the workouts, which run through Tuesday, are not open to the media.  However, stay tuned to our Combine Central page for all the news from Indy!

Would love to hear about Mike Iupati as I think he’ll be able to play right tackle or at worst be a dominate guard for the niners

How interested are the 49ers in Oregon’s 6′ 3 inch 240 lb running back LeGarrette Blount, knowing how bad the 49ers need to command the run game?

  6. By Charles on Feb 24, 2010 | Reply

Is it possible that 49ers will trade Frank Gore for a first round pick and pick up a player like CJ Spiller and draft LeGarrette Blount?

Dont pass up the speed guy like we did with D.Jackson #10 with the eagles we could of had him in the first round with the 29th pick but no we went with a DE who has not work out so far.

A lot of eyes are drawn to lineman and db’s in this draft for our team. I was just wondering, is thier any way to guarantee a pick up of a show stopping safety, or maybe a solid 10 year lineman that can give consistant protection?

I was wondering what the 49ers think of Earl Thomas (Safety – University of Texas). It seems like the 49ers need a “center fielder” type safety.

I think you’re ready to make a real push for the play-offs. With one more “play maker” on either side, and if Alex Smith has a break out season will surly see the franchise back to the glory days……..and better I hope

Good Luck, and continued success with the improment of the team

Hey mike, how about making a splash for a FA on the DL like J Peppers then we can go after an OT in the draft and maybe a guy like Spiller or perhaps Mays. Giving Alex a little time might be the key to the future success of this Franchise and this draft has alot of studs on the OL. It’s a great time to be a niner faithfull and I am very proud of what you’ve done with this organization.

I want to know what you guys think about Punter Scott Ravanesi. Scott played with Southern Illinois a college very close to where I live, and even though we’re pretty good with our punter I still think he would be a very cheap great addition to the 49ers because he can flat out bomb them punts.

It would be kind of cool if you did pick Tebow he reminds me of Steve Young if he took steroids lol. His leadership intangibles are no joke though. His will to listen and learn is a coaches dream from a potential superstar. That kid out Tennessee in a 2nd or 3rd pick would be a good insurance for Gore and Coffee. Unless Spiller is still there for the 16th or 17th pick.

  43. By blaze on Feb 24, 2010 | Reply

if CJ spiller falls to our draft pick, we can consider this as lucky as crabtree falling into our lap. We can use an elusive kick returner/punt returner, we havent had one of those in ages. Plus i dont think coffee was the right fit

Niners have a pass rushing LB in Mr. Brooks. we also have a nice free saftey in Nate clements when they switch him over. The real need is a return Specialist. Javid or CJ Spiller would do nicely. The O-Line needs Trent to take the presure off the rest of the line. 2010……….were back!

  53. By Brian on Feb 24, 2010 | Reply

if you do take tebow he should play full back! love this kids heart and he could be a Tom Rathman type with his skills. Sorry Tim i’m not convinced you can make NFL throws and I think Alex will be better in his first chance at the same system in consecutive years.

from what i’ve seen there are only a few O-linemen worth taking this year. what is the possibilities of adding depth to the o-line? and who might be the better prospects in your opinion?

  58. By Milo Lewis on Feb 25, 2010 | Reply

We need an O-line pick up but thing we can get it at 16. Two questions:

1 – with the first round pick are we considering Cj Spiller – dynamic compliment to Gore and kick off returns could make us dynamic in 2010

2 – Are we open to the option of trading a first round pick for a existing free agent or trade such as Croonate or something.

    Thakns Go 49ers!!

as far as Tebow go let him be somebone elses project I do think coachv Sing and the GM are making ok moves but if there any chance they take insight from a fan, listen:BOTTOM LINE WE NEED SPEED WHETHER IT BE ON O or D ANY ONE OF THOSE MANHANDLING OL WOULD BE GREAT AND PLEEEAASE CONSIDER ONE OF THOSE MANCHILDS ON D(pass rusher) AND I CANT STRESS ENOUGH ABOUT A BIIGG SPEEEDY DB(fitzgerald, bolden and housh 2 year) ALL IN ALL TAKE THE BEST PLAYER AVAILABLE I REALLY DO THINK THAT WORKED OUT FOR US LAST YEAR(it will show) AND PLEASE GET SOME SPPEEEDD(wit body control) P.S. We should Taylor Mays. he would help out with the secondary tremendously. then C.J. Spiller for the return game. keep me posted with what you think.

The 49ers need a To draft a Guard sign pashos for depth and get a S in the 1st round Taylor Mays or whoever is available. hopefully we can pick up sum guards during FA there are gna be 2 AVAILABLE from NE if we can atleast sign 1 of them it will be great then the DRAFT will be piece of cake just adding depth

  64. By Adrian on Feb 25, 2010 | Reply

We could use CJ Spiller to help Frank out. He can also help us with our struggling punt/kick return game. Getting an Right Tackle is crucial also. We need some help at O-line. I really like Eric Berry from Tennessee. We need a stellar safety to watch the deep threat which we clearly got killed on sometimes last season. Next season is our season!!!

  65. By J.Corey on Feb 25, 2010 | Reply

I believe our run stop was great and our pass rush was decent though could always do better. So obviously a great DE is always on a coaches mind. We need help on the O-line so are first pick should REALLY be the best OT on the board, I like Okung’s size he seems like he can hold down the blind side. Great DB’s have came in later rounds but thankfully we have two first round picks so our next pick should be the best on the board at the time. Of course I like that beast Berry from Tenn. but I highly doubt he will be there. But please look into the free agents because we have the salary cap to pick some up, we could really use a powerhouse at DE like peppers, pay him the money he will be worth it, and grab one of the veteran RB’s Westbrook or Tomlison to compliment Gore, we can use it, and trade Coffee he’s worthless. We seem to be one of the only NFL teams left to have only one premier RB, we need another that will produce some positive work. Thanks!

Please focus on the offensive line. It isn’t sexy, but if we could beef up the line and get more protection for Alex and get Frank running wild again, we would be a force to be beaten. Warner’s retirement opens the door for the NFC West.

  68. By ninerlover on Feb 25, 2010 | Reply

its time we settle down and draft someone who can lead us to the super bowl. alex smith is our guy but if we do need a another Qb we have nate davis from ball state he got a connon for a arm. we also need some help on offense Patrick ocung would help us alot. WE DONT NEED TEBOW OR BRANDFORD OR MCCOY if we had to we should look at dez bryant hes an amazing WR and would be a great eddithion to Crabtree. it would be nice to draft tayor mays or another DB. we need to MAN up with our money this offsesen. Lets be smart with our money and sign what we need and relese what we dont. GO 49ERS

Hey guys, I would like to see if we could take a look atJohn Skelton as maybe a late round pickup. I don’t need a bunch of evaluation of the top 15 picks there be plenty of that. We should look at depth and future in the late rounds and get us a steal.

  70. By Steven on Feb 25, 2010 | Reply

First Round: Sam Bradford and Dez Bryant, imagine those two on the field. I know they both played at Oklahoma and Oklahoma State but as a Okstate Fan, Sam Bradford was the best QB I’ve seen by far and Dez Bryant is the best Receiver since Jerry Rice. So if you get those two on the field, watch out because you could see another Steve Young and Jerry Rice Dymanic Duo!!!!! Hands Down!

PS. Singeltary come one make my dreams come true, because those two will spark this young 49er team into a super bowl team!

WITH THE INTENT OF PLAYING SMASHMOUTH FOOTBALL, YOU GUYS DECIDED TO DRAFT A “PREMIER” RECEIVER. AFTER HIS HIGHNESS DECIDED TO JOIN THE TEAM, YOU DECIDED TO CHANGE HORSES IN THE MIDDLE OF THE STREAM, BY CREATING PLAYS TO FEATURE HIM. THE PROBLEM IS, YOU AINT GOT A QUARTERBACK WHO CAN CONSISTENTLY MAKE THE THROWS. IM STILL AMAZED BY THE OFFENSIVE STRATEGY YOU HAVE EMPLOYED, THE ONE THAT INSERTS THE PLAYERS & ASSISTANTS AND THEN BRINGS IN THE COORDINATOR, HHMMM! AS LONG AS A DEFENSIVE-MINDED HEAD COACH CALLS THE SHOTS, THE OFFENSE WILL ALWAYS BE “FULL OF PROMISE”. THE OC NEEDS TO BE GOOD, AND HAVE FREE REIGN WITH PERSONNEL (i.e. GET RID OF SMITH). ITS TOO OBVIOUS, SOME OF THE HATS THAT ARE BEING WORN BY ASSISTANTS JUST DONT FIT. COACH SINGLETARY, YOU WERE AN INCREDIBLE PLAYER, AND YOU BRING TO DEFENSIVE COACHING EVERYTHING YOU HAD/KNEW AS A PLAYER. BUT!! YOU HAVE TO LEAVE THE OFFENSE ALONE, AND BRING IN SOMEONE WHO SEES THE BIG PICTURE AND WILL MAKE THE RIGHT DECISIONS, NOT THE FINANCIAL/BUSINESS DECISIONS. I KNOW ALEX SMITH HAS TO BE A BARGAIN. THE NFL IS JUST TOO FAST FOR HIM.

We need someone on defense who can be a play maker or someone who can devestate an O-Line, to create turnovers or help cause them. Offenses had too much time to throw the ball.

Also, we need better blocking to free up Gore. You will never be able to run at will until you have the blocking or beef up front.

Defense was solid at the end of the year, there are some offensive stars. We need an OL and a QB !! When the offense stops going 3 and out (one of the worst in the league) and starts converting 3rd downs (one of the worst also) the De Fense will shine even more!! OLINE/QB….

Either way i believe in the 49ners goodluck

Bunch of amateurs in here if you ask me. First off, Vick can go push a mop for all I care. If you ‘tards knew anything about football, it starts up front. We can get a good Tackle at #16 or 17. Staley will be an all pro, get another young talent opposite him. Our line is improving. Pick #13 is crucial…it’s hard to decide which position is most important….SS, CB, OLB/DE. With all the holes we need to fill on D, I still think Spiller would be HUGE with our first pick, adds another dimension to our offense, he would be our home run hitter, (i.e. Desean Jackson, Chris Johnson Reggie Bush). Plus he puts our return game in the top 5 in the league. 2 birds with one stone….still with me kiddos? That being said, we could pass on Spiller and hope for Jahvid Best in the second. Still a factor on offense and a solid return guy. Alex Smith will be fine…stop hatin’. Our front 7 is solid, I think we could hold out on drafting a pass rusher until late in the draft and hope he works out, if not, there’ always next year. I like Earl Thomas and think he will be great…in time. Secondary help is needed though, Clements is a washed up spoiled rotten injury. Roman sucks. I wanna see Reggie Smith blossom. Brown has potential. Goldson will be a star. Spencer is inconsistent. I’d like to see San Fran go…………..

Spiller is good…but not worth a 1st rounder…I’d like to see us grab Haden and either Taylor Mays or Earl Thomas. I know everyone says Mays is overrated…but all he lacks is some discipline…which we all know Sing can provide! With Mays’ physical skills and Sing’s intangibles, he would be money. We can grab a return specialist in that later rounds and grab some O-line help in the second or third…but right now, our secondary is keeping us from being a top-notch team. If we can take care of that in the 1st round, then I say fire it up…unless we can swing a deal to get Bradford or Eric Berry…I’d trade one of our 1st’s and a third for either one of them…

I can’t believe someone actually commented to trade one of our first round picks for VICK.That would be the biggest mistake in NFL history.VICK “MIGHT” be worth a 4th or 5th rounder.

    1st round-Earl Thomas-FS/SS-Texas
    1st round-Carlos Dunlap-DE-Florida
    2nd round-Vlad Ducasse-OL-UMass
    3rd round-Rodger Saffold-OL-Indiana
    4th round-Andre Roberts-WR-Citadel
    5th round-Best CB/PR/KR Available

It would be really nice too if we snagged Dunta Robinson off the free agent market. That would strengthen our pass defense remarkably. It would also allow for more options in the draft.

    Taylor Mays and C.J. Spiller

They both would have an impact on the team right away

SHAME ON ME! I FORGOT ABOUT NATE DAVIS. GET RID OF SMITH, USE DAVIS. BUT FIRST! HIRE AN OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR WHO HAS A PROVEN TRACK RECORD ON DEVELOPING QUARTERBACKS, NOT JUST SOMEONE WHO WAS PART OF THE STAFF WHEN SOMEONE ELSE HAD A GREAT YEAR. NATE DAVIS HAS SHOWN ENOUGH FLASHES, WHEN USED, TO SHOWCASE HIS RAW TALENTS. HE IS ONE OF THE TEAMS ANSWERS.

The one player besides the obvious suspects…

    Walter Thurmond III
    Cornerback/return specialist
    from the University of Oregon
    ESPN has him @ 6-1 – 180 lbs.

I want to know how he looks running around… He was hurt last year (a knee injury) give us some insight on how he would fit with the 49ers and how he does @ the combine

    Thanks

How about we trade those two first round picks for a really good corner or someone like Nick Mangold or Chris Snee…

    1. C.J. Spiller RB-WR-KR 4.37 1. Carlos Dunl;ap DE 2. Best OT available 3. Best safety available 4. Jacoby Ford WR-KR 4.37 5. Best OG available 6. Pat Angerer ILB 4.52 7. Junior Galette OLB 4.63
Spiller, Ford, Crabtree and Davis would be a mismatch for any NFL secondary. Dunlap on the other hand would be exactly what the doctor ordered for the 49ers weak pass rush, which would make the 49er secondary that much stronger, End result: A top five offense and defense, equaling playoffs and possible Super Bowl appearance.

Anyone that thinks we dont need an OL product with one of the first rounders is ignorant, that will help the running game and passing game if we can fix the leak at RT. We didnt even run right for most of the season.

The other first should be used on a DB or a playmaker like spiller maybe even more OL help. I would like to see Berry, Earl Thomas, Joe Haden fall to us at 17.

There will be plenty of pass rushers that fall into the second, Dunlap (maybe bc of character issues), Jerry hughs a two time all american, maybe even brandon graham amoung manny others. Also good DB help in second as well.

Third or fourth round they should take Myron Rolle Out of FSU. I am a noles fan and have seen him play many times and saw last year what the noles d was without him. He is a very smart instinctive player with good range and a heavy hitter. he would be a steal for a SS.

Anyone that says they want Vick is also slow in the head, he doesnt fit in the offence at all.

Jacoby ford would be a great pick in the 3rd to 4th round range also.

NINERS PLEASE GO PICK UP SPROLES HE’S A FREE AGENT, CHARGERS ARE LETTING HIM TEST OUT THE MARKET GO GET HIM, WE NEED A RETURN MAN LIKE HIM. ALSO PICK UP ERIC BERRY AND A DEFENSIVE OF END.

Some of you people made some good comments about who we should pick up and some of you just do not know anything about football. If you really look into depth of our season in stats, the 2 weakest areas was our secondary and our running game. In the first round we would go after a OL and someone for the secondary and which i think Earl thomas. Then later we would look at other areas for depth or possible potential starters. DEs (passrush), WRs(KR), DBs etc….

For those who have mentioned Vick, McNabb, and Tebow… You guys are crazy!! I realize Smith is not “the answer” but nothing is fixed with a band-aid or another project. I think this draft will allow us to draft a very good OL and help at key positions, champions are built through the draft with time. Let’s allow to see what Smith can do with the same OC in 2 seasons. If we can make it to the playoffs our running game and Defense is crucial and we won’t go anywhere with a sub-par offensive line and thin secondary and LB crew.

13TH PICK BEST OL ON THE BOARD AND WITH THE 17TH PICK IMA SAY GOLDEN TATE OR JAVID BEST. WE CAN GET ROLLE IN DA 3RD OR 4TH. I ALSO LIKE MILLYARD FROM CINCY.

  116. By Austin on Feb 26, 2010 | Reply

Good Heavens.I can’t believe some of the ideas on here.I heard someone say to trade both 1st round picks for a CB who didn’t even make the pro bowl.Another said to pick Tebow. And someone even begged to pick a WR who is only 5 foot 8 inches.I hope the 49ers staff doesn’t even look at these comments.I know football enough to say this mock draft would improve the 49ers to a whole nother level.I’m talking top 3 defense and top 15 offense.

    1st round-Earl Thomas-FS/SS
    1st round-Carlos Dunlap-DE
    2nd round-Vlad Ducasse-OL
    3rd round-Rodger Saffold-OL
    4th round-Andre Roberts-WR
    5th round-Best Utility Player-CB/KR/PR

And try to pick up Dunta Robinson-CB from the free agent market. That would most certainly be a playoff team.

Some of you guys couldnt be GMs on Madden Franchise mode. Who said draft a QB again one word DUMB. Alex in the same offense for first time looks good already. Every time he has had time hes been good for the most part. Why we need another WR in the first round DUMB an a waste. Gilyard looks availble later on. I really like Berry or Thomas with the 13 but spiller would be good too, then Lupti would be nice at 17 we can pick up Kyle wilson in the second or Rolle in the third we can even pick up mcluster hes also super fast. Jahvid is a beast my cousin trained with him for track hes a cool dude too no character problems but I dont think hes gona be there in tha 2nd.

But if we make some magic an pick up peppers what a boost. Picking up Duante Robinson instant booast. It would make draft that much easier

  119. By bayboy on Feb 27, 2010 | Reply

I agree with letumkno… I like Duante Robinson and Rolle. By watching the combine today, I hope they consider Campbell Lupati, Lauvao or Young
