Monday’s Locker Room Talk

Posted by Taylor Price on December 7, 2009 – 3:53 PM

Mike Singletary was direct in addressing a number of topics in his Monday press conference, but was less straightforward when sharing his opinions of the officiating in the 49ers 20-17 Sunday loss against the Seattle Seahawks.

Singletary said he sends a letter every week to the NFL to question some of the calls he disagreed with in a given game. But this week’s letter will have “several paragraphs” added to it according to the 49ers head coach.

Despite the result, Singletary would not put the blame squarely on the officials.

“I just want to make sure that our players, coaching staff, our fans, everybody involved with the 49ers, understand this is not about the referees,” he said towards the end of his press conference. “They did not fumble.  They did not make bad plays. We did. I don’t want to put this on the referees.”

Singletary did reveal one of the complaints that will appear in the extra paragraphs. The 49ers head coach was not happy with the lack of time his defense was given to make substitutions.

As for adjustments made by his offense, the head coach was asked if Seattle’s defense dictated the 49ers favoring a passing attack. He responded, “I think they were more focused on the run because of what happened last time.” Frank Gore rushed for 207 yards in the team’s first meeting, but only for 25 yards the second time around.

Singletary spoke most positively when the play of his quarterback Alex Smith became the topic of conversation.

“So far, so good,” Singletary said in examining Smith’s play this season. “I think he’s working his tail off. He’s using the tools around him.”

Singletary said he’s behind offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye and is not second-guessing the play-calling of his team’s final drive.

“We just didn’t make the plays,” Singletary said. “If we make the plays, we’re not talking about the calls.”

More Monday Notes

-The 49ers reported no injuries following the Seahawks game.

-Left tackle Joe Staley hopes to return to the starting lineup in time for the 49ers Monday night home game against the Arizona Cardinals. Staley has been lifting weights recently and has even gone through some of his pass steps, but not at full-speed. He’s scheduled for an MRI on Monday to make sure he isn’t having any setbacks with his rehab.

-“It feels a lot better than what it was. I’m getting some strength back,” Staley said. “I’m going to be smart about it. I’m not just going to go out there and expect to be able to go full-go. I’m definitely going to be honest with it. I’m going to be cautious at first but if it feels good, I’m going to give it a go.”

-Vernon Davis said he had a hard time tracking Smith’s fourth quarter pass that he dropped in the end zone. “When you go into a different environment, you really have to focus when you’re not used to it. If it’s an environment where it’s cold, you just have to deal with it and put it in the back of your mind,” he said. “I had a hard time adjusting to it. I couldn’t pick it up. It’s one of the same plays I’ve caught all my touchdowns on – I just couldn’t get to it in time. I couldn’t track it.”

-Davis said the 49ers will stick together and will remain as one no matter what their record shows. “We’re still together. No one is pointing fingers at anybody. We’re a family. We have to continue to play hard and focus on our goals and what we want to accomplish for the rest of the season.”

-Davis’ quarterback echoed those sentiments. “I think that’s the strength of this team – we do stay together,” Alex Smith said. “I think the character in this locker room is a strength that we have.”

-Smith said the most important thing is for the 49ers to remain focused. “I think that’s what this team needs to understand. As a team, I think everyone is disappointed with what happened yesterday. There’s no doubt about that. But there are still a lot of games to be played and some growth for us. We’ve done some good things these past few weeks. I think we need to continue to improve upon that to get where we’re going. Just because the playoff picture is bleak, doesn’t change where this team is headed and where this offense is headed as well.”

Niners i am dissapointed. It is the coaching staffs job to see where we are getting it done. The players having to come to them and tell them is unacceptable. We can go 4-0 for the rest of the season. The question is do you guys want to. The team did not want the playoffs bad enough so if we do not go it is what we earned. I think this is our growing time. Coaching staff lets make use of our two first rounders and get a DB/DL (biltz). A OL, and someone to make Gore fight for his right to start. He has been a dissapointent this season.

i think that the niners should have run the ball alittle more than 11 times. seattle played the run the first time we played them so what was different about doing it again. i think they got happy with the passing game i just 4got about the run… how do you call 2 pass plays at the goal line. y would you throw the ball three times from inside the 20. i think it was a poor game calling by the coachs. now lets focus on arizona and kick their butts…. gooooo niners

Bad play calling was the reason for this loss… It’s the same thing that was happening at the beginning of the season, only now, the Niners are calling too many pass plays and not enough running ones. Don’t get me wrong, I love the passing game, but we need to balance it out with the run… We ‘re looking really good for next year, though…

I dont know where to start. The team always says that we have to execute yeah niners did good through 1st qt and second qt, about second half you see the team was struggling. The only way to feel better is just put this loss behind and focus on Arizona. But from last previous games Finally Alex has emerged to be one of the elite quarterbacks in the NFL. From watching seattles game we also need a oline, Cb’s and safety for next years draft we already have alots of talent on offense.now we gotta proctect the Qb more, and have a good pass defense.
NIners please beat the Arizona Cardinals, and please we need about 4 more wins to make it to the playoffs. NiNEr4LIFE!

THERE IS NO PLAYOFF HOPES ANYMORE UNLESS WE BEAT ARIZONA AND THEN THEY LOSE TO DETROIT, ST. LOUIS, AND GREEN BAY WHICH I DONT THINK WILL HAPPEN AFTER THE WAY THEY MURDERED THE VIKINGS WHEN EVERYONE WAS PICKING ARIZONA TO LOSE.

INCONSISTENCY IS THE PROBLEM WITH THE NINERS. THERE NO EXCUSES.
MIAMI WENT 1-15 TO 11-5 PLAYOFFS IN ONE YEAR. IT HAS TAKEN THE 49ERS 7 YEARS TO BARELY SEE WHAT THEY HAVE TO WORK WITH.
THEY NEED TO GET RID OF PLAYERS THAT ARE NOT WORTH THE MONEY.
PARCELLS GOT TO MIAMI AND GOT RID OF HALF THE ROSTER AND GOT QUALITY PLAYERS AT A REASONABLE PRICE. HE DIDN’T CARE WHO THEY WERE FOR EXAMPLE(JASON TAYLOR) WHO WANTED MONEY BUT WAS NOT PRODUCING.

49ERS HAVE 2 1ST ROUND PICKS NEXT DRAFT AND BETTER DO SOMETHING PRODUCTIVE WITH THEM BECAUSE NEXT YEAR THE PLAYOFFS IS EXPECTED FROM THIS TEAM NOTHING LESS OR THERE WILL BE A LOT OF ANGRY FANS.

I thought Singletary sort of sugar coated it a little, but I acknowledge that the 49ers are in the same boat together so it’s not a surprise that he did so.

Smith looks like the guy at QB, not his fault they lost. The receivers need to catch those catchable dropped balls, two weeks in a row it has happened. Smith needs to learn from his fewer and fewer brain farts (bad throws, bad reads, bad progressions), Gore has to hold on to the ball, and ST can’t make those boneheaded calls/plays. Smith should have had three touchdowns at the half and at least four total. As much cuss as is talked about Smith, he needs his teammates to help him out a little.

Smith deserves to be critized for his errors, and hopefully he learns from them. But his teamates have to make the plays that were there, and Smith cannot be blamed for those missed opportunities.

McCloughan and co. need to do an A-job this offseason to support and enhance what they already have. Maybe they can ask Montana, Young, and Rice to give their current players some tips. Wiith the right moves the 49ers can make the playoffs next season and make a run to the top. Hoped it would happen this year, but whatever.

I don’t always find myself agreeing with other posts but as I have read the above posts I am thinking “Yeh that’s some of my thinking also” espeically some comments on upgrading the roster. As fan I am realistic about this and understand that some things take a little time. I just hope that those who are the playmakers won’t make the dumb mistakes (like the botched handoff on the punt return that led to a Seattle score). Give us a reason to be loyal fans.Don’t tell us “Show us”.

disagree with getting rid of gore he has shown ability tomake alot of plays including good pass catching ability as shown last week with his td catch in endzone where he was toeing the sideline. As far as getting rid of alex smith and getting a qb who is more sure of himself look at his throws he is confident just vd and crabtree have to make though catches and they will this is crabtree”s rookie campaign as well as coach singe”s too.I can honestly say most of us are mad because mike has brought a winning attitude back to niner nation which we have lacked for a few years and we expect them to win but realistically it takes time to get your offense and defense on the same page. Just wanna say it’s happening alot faster than most people realize our offense is improving each week so go niners show arizona we are for real and are gonna kick their butts in the division next year

i agree, i think as fans we just need to have faith in our teams development, if you think about it weve came a looong ways in the passing game since the start of our season, baby steps guys, baby steps. next year we will most definantly make playoffs if we continue to progress as we have this season,we could have sealed alot of the games except for the atlanta game were we got tore up, other than that game im satisfied at the bright future the niners have ahead of them, go niners!!!

No doubt I’m disappointed, this was a game I was definitely counting on. I was also counting on the Cardinals to stumble hard against the Vikings. Didn’t happen. This game hurts, but it is clearly evident that these 49ers are not quite sure just exactly who they are yet. I was under the impression that this should have been determined throughout the off season program not by week 13 of the regular season.

I look at it like this fellow 9er fans. It’s Coach Singletary’s first full season as a head coach. He really needs to transition into becoming a head coach…. As a faithful fan, ever since Dennis Erickson took over we have moved in reverse every season. Something is different, new personnel, new coaches, new schemes, new ideas, new captains, etc.

I want see Alex Smith go through training camp with Crabtree, Gore, Davis, and Morgan. I want to see both Raye and Johnson getting this offense ready to be a balanced offensive attack in 2010. I want to see 15 play 9:17 drives consistently.

I want to see our defense rush the passer….I want to see our secondary ball hawking the air….I want to see us bottle up the run consistently…

But I seriously do not believe all of the talent is here to accomplish this year, and I see Singletary Camp trying to make due with what we have on the field to salvage a season that seems to have started without us.

I just hope these last four games define who the 49ers will be, and I hope we sign both of our two first round draft picks before training camp begins.

Consistent winning will not come until consistent execution is shown week in and week out. We haven’t done that since Coach Singletary took over. It makes me wonder what the team would have looked like if Mike Martz was still the OC.

We finished hot last year, and I seem to remember both the passing game…and the running game doing well CONSISTENTLY.

How will the San Francisco 49ers move forward intrigues me the most?

Most statements I’ve read can relate too and mostly agree with. However this cutting Gore&Smith go’s to far. You can see the growth this team has made just this year alone. Lets face the facts this is Sing’s first year as HC and you can see the rockie mistakes he’s made.Next year he wil perform his dutys mutch better. And are drafts &FA pick ups must be top notch and focesd on key positions.[EX.a solid CB & FS, the OL,and an explosive young return man.] I hope the staff as already identafied these weaknesses and shifted thier scouting aproperitly. I feal like we are right on the cuspe of chearing for a championship team and can finaly uncross are fingers and pray the prayers of thanks instead of prayers of help. GO niners

Look here folks, we don’t need a QB at draft day. Smith has finally became a development worth talking about. He threw the passes that should’ve been caught. Davis had the pass hit him in the helmet, same passes as the others he’s caught in past weeks he just lost the ball. Crabtree looked like he was afraid of the hit he was about to receive if he did catch the ball (Which sing said they didn’t tell everyone they’d be using gametime). I can honestly say, after 7 years of bad seasons this one felt like it’d be special. It was.

Favre needing to make a miracle pass with 15 seconds left, After Green bay going up 3 scores, we came back at the second half and evened the game up. The defense holding strong and not allowing Peyton Manning to score a TD and relying on a trick play to beat us. I’ve seen some GREAT D at times, and some pretty shotty D plays at times. The offense is starting to gel, the Defense was trying to live up to high expectations as well trying to get themselves to a top 5 tiered D. After Singletary’s first year of actually being an NFL coach, I see alot of improvements in attitude, all we need is focus and determination. I believe myself as well as others downplayed the Seattle game and purely focused on Monday night and having us win and Arizona lose so we’d be one game behind them for leaders in the NFC West and both didn’t happen. We must live one game at a time to get to where we need to go. Now comes the gel time to get ready for next year. Hopefully we don’t become a dog & pony show and keep Smith in the spread all the time because if we do, Gore’s days as an upper tiered RB will be all but forgotten by not living up to the positives he’s already displayed in years past. Another superbowl will be ours in the near future, it just takes time and patience.

    49ers for now and forever.

Why can we not pick up Michael Vick or Jeff Garcia or someone like this? Since Garcia has left the niners haven’t done much. How can we not get 3rd down conversions against Seattle? I was sick to see that we lost this week, I thought for sure we wouldv’e won Alex did ok but still has alot more room for improvement. I believe in what Coach Singeltary is doing and Im finally glad that he put in Crabtree and Morgan together that wil lpush them as well as Davis to be better receivers. I also think that Alex Smith as finally come together and calmed down alot so he can read the defense better. the Spread seems to be working for him. But in retrospect I agree that Gore remains the prime man to get hot to get this offense working. We have to be more balalnce and smash the defense and make them respect the run and the pass will open up. Keep on this track Beat the Cards and we will make the playoffs with a lot of luck and effort! Niner 4 Life!

I ma not a blogger but I have to comment on these posts. The niners are looking great they have beat the cards already and they gave the vikings, colts, titans, packers and seahawks all the could handle in their own stadiums on the road, which all especially in Seatle very tough places to play, which nobody is talking about. Remember this is the first year under Singletary and Jimmy Ray, and Cradtree’s rookie year and more or less Alexs first year, if we can get a few OL/DL,and DB’s and get Coffee going the niers are on top no doubt the future is very bright. I am very glade to Alex is finally getting some support and not being drug through the mud, if anything else he is a great roll model and seems to be a good guy.

This has to be the dumbest thing I have ever seen! Allow these guys to be their own players and make name for themselves.

You are calling for Gores head and praising Coffee like he has done half the work that Gore has. When Coffee started the few weeks that Gore was out I did not see him do anything. Gore is a complete back who can run, catch and block.

And to say Coffe is anything like Craig; makes you sound even more stupid. What are you basing this on, the preseason?

Now don’t get me wrong I like Coffee. In the NFL now days, you need a 1-2 punch at the RB position and both of these guys can get it done with a halfway soild OL.

I have to admit I was pretty pissed on Sunday, I even threw my beer at the t.v., but now that I’ve calmed down I looked back and could see that were going in the right direction it’s just that we niner fans are tired of one losing season after another, and after sing became the head coach, we would’ve liked him to turn this thing around in one season, but in reality thats not gonna happen, lets give him a chance and I know that in the near future we will be the dominant team that we are known for in those glory years. I AM A NINER FAN FOR LIFE WIN OR LOSE!!!!!!!!!!

did some body say west coast LOVE IT! If they cant fix the OL it wont matter.they cant even handle run gap blocking so pulling is out of the question. However smart drafting or free agents should help. Then they can pic km apart with the pass and crush them with the run.And when the D stacks the box or brings the safeties down its over the top. However this hype about Coffee I don’t get and Gore still has some miles left plus hes proven himself. But his expiration date is coming (BUMMER!) With some time behind Gore he might be something good. FYI nobody and I mean NOBODY will ever be another J.RICE or Montana! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

I had just about given up on Alex Smith, even though I admired his attitude, but I’m much encouraged by the last few games. However, he still lacks what I call “the magic” ie: the ability to come up with the big play at the right time to win the game. Perhaps he will develop that as he becomes more confident. I’m hoping. All the great ones have that intangeable and maybe you’re just born with it. The two big concerns I see is an O line to protect Alex and open holes for Gore and a pass rush enough to harrass the opposing QB. Given enough time, any QB in the league can hit receivers no matter how good your corners are. You can’t cover forever. Hope the draft can yield some hulking fast behemoths to anchor the line.

  35. By Gary Bitto on Dec 9, 2009 | Reply

We need a O-line to run which we don’t have. Acouple yrs ago when Gore ran wild
we had a O=line. When you tell every one that you are going to play smach mouth
football and run and run the ball you had best be able to back it up, we can’t do that
with this O-line. So you do more of what you can, which is pass the ball. Draft
more O-lineman then we can eather run or pass.
buddster, If you remeber that Young and Rice had more TD passes together

We will make the other NFC divisons look sick. Then in the off season pick up mike vick let him start and maybe we can make the playoffs 1994 was a long time ago and the rebuild should be complete by now. I am disappointed about the loss. I still think the niners are on the right track despite their 1-13 3rd conversions. They lost close games and are improving all around little by little. Its just those little mistakes that cost us big. Those mistakes take to time fix. Alex looks well and is developing well in the spread; where he should of been to begin with. All Alex needs is time to gain some confidence with the new offense players and schemes.

We are all tierd of loosing but I stand people whinning which player should be here which player should be there, cut this player cut that player. Dont diss the team. Get real, this is not a Madden game. We have real great players and they are a young team all around that will develop.

It aint over until it is over!!!
