Week 13 Blog: 49ers vs. Seahawks
Posted by Scott Kegley on December 6, 2009 – 12:04 PMIt’s 10:55 PT and I just got settled into the press box. I always love it when you can get connected to the internet fast and as painless as possible. Should be ready to go in just a bit. I have a great view from the press box and I’m situated in between our PR staff and our general manager, Scot McClouoghan. The photo above was taken right from my seat. In the row in front of me is John Clayton of ESPN.
I’ll post the inactives when they’re announced 90 minutes before the game, but here is the injury report for both teams.
49ers Inactives: QB Nate Davis (3rd QB), CB Nate Clements, CB Marcus Hudson, LB Diyral Briggs, C Cody Wallace, T Joe Staley, WR Isaac Bruce, DT Kentwan Balmer
Seahawks Inactives: QB Mike Teel (3rd QB), LB D.D. Lewis, G Mike Gibson, G Manfield Wrotto, DT Red Bryant, TE Cameron Morrah, DE/DT Cory Redding, DE Derek Walker
FIRST QUARTER:
The 49ers will kickoff to the Seahawks to start the game. Louis Rankin fielded the kick in the end zone and returned it to the 20. The 49ers called timeout prior to the very first play run by Seattle. 1st and 10 from the 20, Matt Hasselbeck hit his checkdown, Justin Griffin for no gain as he was hit right away. 2nd and 10, Houshmandzadeh was the intended target but slipped – incomplete. 3rd and 10, Hasselbeck threw for Burleson in the 49ers zone coverage, but the ball was behind him. 49ers get a nice 3 and out to start the game. Arnaz Battle took the punt. Michael Robinson was called for a block in the back during the return which will push the 49ers back to the 21.
1st and 10 from the 21, Smith threw for Michael Crabtree on a short slant. The ball was right there, but he couldn’t make the catch. 2nd and 10, Smith looked for Crabtree on a flag route to the left side, but the ball sailed high. 3rd and 10, from the shotgun, Smith checked down to Gore on the right side, but he couldn’t avoid Trufant to get to the sticks. Andy Lee will punt. Burleson let the ball bounced in front of him and the 49ers downed the 51-yard punt at the 22.
1st and 10 from the 22, Manny Lawson came off the right side for the sack and forced the fumble which he recovered. Lawson beat Griffith with a bull rush on the play.
1st and 10 from the SEA 20, Smith took the inside handoff and plunged ahead for a gain of 4. 2nd and 6, Gore got the carry again, but only picked up 1 yard. 3rd and 5 from the 15, Smith hit Josh Morgan who got just past the sticks and cut inside and then made the grab. 1st and goal from the 9, Smith threw for Vernon Davis right along the goal line. Davis juggled it and couldn’t make the catch. 2nd and goal, Smith threw quick for Morgan who got down to the 1-yard line. He reached for the pylon, but the refs marked him down at the 1. 3rd and goal from the 1, Smith faked the handoff and got hit as he tried to hit Gore out of the backfield. The 49ers offense stays on the field. 4th and goal from the 1, the 49ers will have to burn another timeout as the clock was winding down. 4th down, Smith plake faked again and threw back left for Delanie Walker. Walker was grabbed and mauled, but somehow there was no flag thrown. That is a huge play in the early moments of this game.
1st and 10 from the 1, Julius Jones ran up the middle and was stopped for no gain – nearly a safety. 2nd and 10, Jones got the run again gaining 3 up the middle. 3rd and 7, Hasselbeck got pressured as Justin Smith dove for him up the middle. Hasselbeck’s pass was at the feet of Griffith. Battle fielded the punt at the 50 and picked up a couple yards up the middle on the return.
1st and 10 from the SEA 42, Smith threw for Davis crossing right to left. The ball was right there but dropped. 2nd and 10, Smith hit Josh Morgan who turned and stopped about 8-yards out. 3rd and 2 from the 34, Smith hit Walker over the middle for the first down – flag on the play. Vernon Davis was called for offensive PI for a 10-yard penalty. 3rd and 12 from the 44, Smith hit Crabtree right near the sticks, but was marked just short of the first down. Timeout San Francisco, their final timeout of the half. On the replay it looked like Crabtree made the catch beyond the sticks. It won’t matter though as Smith faked the handoff and threw back for Vernon Davis who was wide open and streaked down the left sideline for the touchdown. That’s the most touchdowns by a tight end in franchise history – 10.
49ers 7 – Seahawks 0
Nendey’s kick was fielded at the 10 by Rankin and returned to the 23. 1st and 10, Jones got the carry and was stuck by Patrick Willis up the middle after a gain of 2. 2nd and 8, Brown jumped the route of Deion Branch and nearly picked it off. If he could have made the grab, he had lots of daylight the other way. 3rd and 8, Brooks and Haralson converged for the sack. The ball popped loose, but was recovered by Seattle. Battle fielded the punt and handed off to Brandon Jones. Jones muffed the handoff and then couldn’t recover it as it bounced right to Seattle.
1st and 10, Jones picked up 6 yards. 2nd and 4 from the 7, Hasselbeck couldn’t find and open target and threw it out of the back of the end zone. 3rd and 4, Hasselbeck rolled and found Branch against the coverage of Mark Roman in the back of the end zone for the score to tie it up.
49ers 7 – Seahawks 7
Josh Morgan caught the kickoff in the end zone and took a knee for the touchback. 1st and 10 from the 20, Smith hit Davis on a short cross for a 7-yard gain. 2nd and 3, Smith hit Crabtree on a quick cross as the pressure came. Crabtree got the first down out to the 36. 1st and 10, Smith hit Walker on a post out past midfield. 1st and 10 from the SEA 46, Gore took the handoff from the shotgun and got a good block and made some nice moves for a 6-yard pickup. 2nd and 4 with Smith under center, Smith hit Morgan over the middle who couldn’t hand on as he was drilled by Aaron Curry. 3rd and 4, Smith backed up under pressure and threw too high for Crabtree. Burleson called for the fair catch at the 13.
1st and 10, Jones plunged ahead for a 3-yard gain. 2nd and 7, Jones got around the right edge for a gain of 6 and that will end the first quarter.
SECOND QUARTER:
3rd and 1 for Seattle from the 22, Hasselbeck hit Obomanu crossing after the play action for the first down. 1st and 10, Hasselbeck hit Jones on the screen and was pushed out by Goldson after a gain of 7. 2nd and 3 from the SEA 41, Hasselbeck hit Houshmandzadeh for a gain of 7 wide right. 1st and 10 from the SEA 48, Forsett took the handoff, but the 49ers filled the gaps, holding him to a gain of 2. 2nd and 8, Hasselbeck hit Burleson down the right side on a comeback as Bly complained about a pushoff. 1st and 10 from the 35, Forsett ran behind the right side for a gain of 3. 2nd and 7, Hasselbeck hit Griffith who got behind the coverage of Lawson and made the catch down at the 7-yard line. 1st and goal from the 7, Forsett was stopped and the ball stripped and recovered, but the refs ruled his forward progress was already stopped – SEA keep the ball. 2nd down, Lawson wrestled down Hasselbeck who was still able to get the ball to the RB but jones was pushed out for a 2-yard loss. 3rd down, Forsett caught the screen pass which was well setup and hi ran in for the score. The 49ers have really struggled against the screen pass in recent weeks and that continues so far today. Hasselbeck was 7 of 7 passing on the drive.
Seahawks 14 – 49ers 7
Morgan took the return and hurdled one man as he ran to his right. 1st and 10 from the 23, Smith hit Gore on the screen to the right for a good gain of 7 yards. 2nd and 3, Smith found Walker out short right who caught the ball and turned upfield for a 6-yard gain. 1st and 10 from the 36, Smith hit Davis on a deep seem route for a gain of 42. That’s a season-long for Davis. 1st and 10 from the SEA 22, Smith connected with Morgan in the front right corner of the end zone for the touchdown – great pass and good awareness by Morgan to get his feet down in bounds.
49ers 14 – Seahawks 14
Good play by Joe Nedney on the kickoff as Obomanu had some room down the left side, but the kicker was able to push him out at the SEA 36. 1st and 10, Smith hit TJ (which I will be referring to Houshmandzadeh from now on because it is too long to type) for a gain of 9. 2nd and 1, Jones plunged ahead for the first down and a gain of 3. 1st and 10, Seneca Wallace hit Rankin for a gain of 7. 2nd and 3, Willis hit Jones right at the line of scrimmage for no gain. 3rd and 3, Hasselbeck floated it for Burleson who looked to have Bly totally beat. Bly made a great recovery to get back and dive to knock the ball away. Battle fair caught the punt at the 9.
1st and 10, Gore got around the right edge for a gain of 3. 2nd and 7 from the 11, Smith hit Walker wide right immediately and he picked up 4. 3rd and 3, Seattle sent the house and Smith had to get rid of it early and the ball bounced short of Crabtree. Burleson made one man miss and got back to the42, but a block in the back by Seattle will back them up.
1st and 10 from the 31, Forsett banged ahead for a gain of 5. 2nd and 5, Hasselbeck escaped pressure and had a ton of running room and got down to the SF 41. Keith Smith was called for illegal use of hands and that will tack on 5 more. 1st and 10 from the 36, Jones carried for a gain of 2. 2nd and 8, Hasselbeck danced around in the pocket to avoid the pressure and ended up picking up 2 on the play. TWO MINUTE WARNING. 3rd and 6, Michael Lewis cam unblocked for the sack and forced fumble. Seattle was able to recover it, but for a 7-yard loss. That moves them back and the Hawks will have to punt. Jon Ryan will take a delay of game to get a little more room to punt and run the clock down to 1:11. The ball bounced at the one and rolled into the end zone for a touchback.
1:03 left in the half – 1st and 10 from the 20, it lokked like Tapp jumped offsides but it wasn’t called. Smith threw it low of the receiver just to get it away. 2nd and 10, Smith checked down to Gore who couldn’t make the grab. (:52 left) 3rd and 10, Smith hit Morgan crossing short and was pushed out after a gain of 6. Lee will come in to punt. Great tackle by Tarell Brown on the punt to get Burleson down at the 20. That’s big since the Hawks still have all their timeouts with :37 left in the half.
1st and 10, Hasselback hit Jones who ran out of bounds for a 4-yard loss. 2nd and 14, Hasselback threw too long for Branch oon the post route as Brown had great coverage. (:27) 3rd and 14, Jones took the handoff and that’ll be it as the clock winds down on the first half. Halftime score: 49ers 14 – Seahawks 14. The 49ers though will get the ball at the start of the second half.
THIRD QUARTER:
Morgan returned the kick out to the 30. 1st and 10, Smith hit Davis out right for a gain of 5. 2nd and 5, Smith couldn’t get the ball off before the pressure from Mebane arrived for the sack and loss of 7. 3rd and 12 from the 28, Smith threw after a couple of fakes, but Gore couldn’t hold on. Burleson avoided a few tackler, but couldn’t avoid Brit Miller at the 28.
1st and 10 from the 28, Jones bounced out right, but the 49ers strung him out and Lawson made the tackle after a gain of 2. 2nd and 8, Jones bounced around up the middle and ended up gaining 6 yards. 3rd and 2, Hasselbeck threw long for Branch down the left side. Spencer had good coverage as the pass sailed long. A good return by Battle looks like it’s coming back with yellow laundry at the 10-yard line. Roman was called for a block in the back.
1st and 10 from the 5, a false start will back the 49ers up half the distance to the goal. 1st and 12 from the 3, Gore couldn’t get starrted up the middle and might actually lose about half a yard. 2nd and 13, Gore carried again up the middle , but there wasn’t much there again and he’ll pick up just 1. 3rd and 12, the handoff goes to Gore again as the 49ers play it conservative. It was only a gain of 4 so Lee will punt. Michael Robinson made a great tackle to wrap up Burleson at the SEA 46.
1st and 10 from the 46, Lawson flew in to pressure Hasselbeck who was barely able to get the ball off to Griffith for no gain. 2nd and 10, Hasselbeck hit Forsett on the screen, but Willis made a nice play to get wide and wrestle him down after a gain of 2. 3rd and 8, Hasselback escaped the pocket but Brooks chased him down before he could get too far. Ryan will come in to punt. Battle let the punt bounce behind him and it went Seattle’s way, not going into the end zone and was downed at the SF 6.
1st and 10 from the 6, Smith threw complete to Crabtree on a dig route for a gain of 20. 1st and 10 from the 26, Smith escaped the pocket and scrambled right for a short gain of just 1. 2nd and 9, Walker got the handoff on the end around, avoided a tackler in the backfield and side stepped his way for a good gain. A block in the back by Crabtree will back them up to the 24. 2nd and 12 from the 24, Smith hit Crabtree on the WR screen and he was hit by Wilson for a 3-yard loss. 3rd and 15 from the 21, Smith had pressure and then rolled right to throw it away. Burleson took the punt and returned it to around the 30. So after fast starts by both teams, the last 9 possessions have ended in punts.
Seattle ball – 1st and 10 from the 31, Jones gets the handoff and plunges ahead behind a good surge from the line for a 5-yard gain. 2nd and 5, Jones bounced outside for a gain of 4. 3rd and 1 from the 40, Hasselbeck scrambled and was hit short of the line. Seattle was called for holding, but it will be declined. Hasselbeck is still down after the hit he took on the play. Hasselbeck was hit by Goldson and Spikes. Battle caught the punt and avoided the first man, but was dragged down as he was swarmed at the 13.
49ers ball – 1st and 10 from the 13, Gore got a little bit of running room as he slid left for a gain of 3. 2nd and 7, Smith threw to Crabtree on a quick slant. Crabtree looked for the flag for PI, but didn’t get one. 3rd and 7, Smith hit Morgan, but he’ll be just short of the sticks. Burleson slipped some tackle and got the ball out to the 40.
***Twitter is over capacity so we apologize if you’re not receiving our usual updates.
1st and 10, Jones got the handoff and ran straight ahead for a gain of 2. 2nd and 8, Jones was strung out wide as Roman closed for a 3-yard loss. 3rd and 11 from the 40, Hasselbeck made a great play to avoid pressure and lob the ball for Burleson and a 23-yard gain. That ends the 3rd quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER:
1st and 10, Hasselbeck threw quick to Burleson who picked up 4. 2nd and 6, Jones got the handoff but was stopped after a gain of 1. 3rd and 5 from the 32, Haralson came back as Hasselbeck stepped up and dragged him down for the sack. Mare will come on to attempt the long field goal. Mare instead pouched it and it was downed at the 2. There was a flag for illegal man downfield, but it was waved off. The 49ers continue not to get any help from the officials.
49ers ball – 1st and 10 from the SF 2, Smith hit Davis wide left who stepped out of bounds after a gain of 7. 2nd and 3, Davis got the ball again on a crossing route and dragged Curry for a couple yards on his way to pick up 17. 1st and 10 from the 26, Smith hit Crabtree on a deep in out for a 17-yard gain. 1st and 10 from the 43, Morgan got the ball on a double reverse. There was good blocking to the left side and Morgan picked up 20. 1st and 10 from the SEA 37, Smith hit Gore quick who avoided one man and picked up 11. 1st and 10 from the 26, Gore plunged ahead and coughed up the ball as he fought for extra yardage. Seattle recovered and returned the ball all the way to the SF 41.
Seahawks ball – 1st and 10 from the SF 41, Hasselbeck threw complete for Burleson who had Spikes turned around and picked up 9. 2nd and 1, Forsett got the carry and ran ahead to pick up the first down. 1st and 10, Hasselbeck check down to Forsett at the last minute for a big gain of 15 yards. 1st and 10 from the 15, Lawson got off his block and dragged down Forsett for a loss of 3. 2nd and 13, Hasselbeck got out of the pocket and slid for a gain of 2. 3rd and 11 from the 16, Hasselbeck hit Carlson over the middle, but he’ll be just shy of the first down marker. Mare will come in for the short field goal. The field goal is good and the Seahawks have the lead.
Seahawks 17 – 49ers 14
The 49ers get the kickoff with 5:30 remaining. Morgan had a nice return as he got some good blocks and got out to the 35. 1st and 10 from the 35, Smith hit Crabtree on a shallow cross for a gain of 6. 2nd and 4, Smith hit Jones beyond the sticks, but another call will go against the 49ers as Jones was flagged for offensive PI. That was a close call to say the least. 2nd and 14, Jones makes good catching a beautiful ball from Smith out to the 50. 1st and 10, Smith threw for Crabtree who was dragged down. The officials looked and didn’t throw the flag right away. The other official did throw the flag and the 49ers will have the ball at the 22 after the flag for PI. 1st and 10, Smith threw quick to Gore wide left. Gore stumbled but picked up 6. 2nd and 4, Smith looked for Davis on the seem. The TE nearly made the catch, but it bounced off his hands incomplete. 3rd and 4, Smith’s pass was behind Crabtree so it looks like Nedney will come on for the field goal. The field goal is good and this thing is deadlocked with 2:57 left.
49ers 17 – Seahawks 17
Josh Wilson took the kickoff out to the 25 where Seattle will begin a very big drive. 1st and 10 from the 25, Jones got around the right side for a first down. 1st and 10 from the 36, Hasselbeck threw complete to TJ for a gain of 7. 2nd and 3, Hasselbeck hit TJ crossing out to the SEA 48 and the clock will stop at 2:00.
I have to run down to the field for postgame so I don’t miss coach’s press conference. Stay updated on Twitter.

Ok Niners here we go. We need 100% out of everyone from here on out. A big win today following a loss by arizona leads us to a showdown next monday. A loss and next weeks game is pretty much meaningless. We had a good start and terrible middle, and hopefully the season ends on a high note. Lets see what kind of team we have here. Everyone must give all they have (coaches included). Is something special going to happen? Leave it all on the field. Play smart, no dumb penalties, avoid turnovers, make your blocks, move the chains, and show what we can do.

You throw the ball on every down and now your pinned down inside the 5 and give it to Gore 3 straight times….Maybe running the ball a bit more would get him and the O line going……ALL good teams run the ball, we dont and it will cost us.

Look at your starting RBs rush attempts…Why is A Smith in shotgun on 1/2 the downs of the game?……Control the ball, use a balanced offense and stop trying to be a high powered, throwing team…we dont have the talent for that….
You get Gore 100 yds a game and we win..What did he have today 30 yds on 10 attempts..in a game that was tied most of the time..

blame the punt team for the lose..if they wouldve had made the tackle near where the returner caught it. the game would be going to over time..and whats up with the fumble in the red zone..dam 9ers im a big fan but im so tired of you guys losing games you should have won..example the vikings game we shouldve won

Great job Singletary way to give the seahawks a golden shot to win the game. instead of running on 3rd and 3 and making them burn a timeout or possibly pick up the first down he sets up three long routes and has smith air it out for a hopeful 20 yarder.

Niners lost…defensive holding…..what is this! Why when Seattle plays @ home they hardly have penalities! Total crap!@

Give me a break!!!! We nee 3 yards and you pass for 30. We get the ball back with 50sec and give it to them with 20+ at the 50 yard line!! Who the hell makes these calls up!! Again we do not know how to close or finish a game.

it is harder each season to keep on watching the NFL. The Niners have been my team since the beginning but it hard to watch. They have lost games that they should have won. But hopefully they will win some games and i am sticking by them.

I love my 9ers. They are giving us some great football this year. But never in my life have I predicted the final outcome. When I saw we only had 54 seconds to play, I thought to myself, there is no way we are going to score. We have to run the clock down and try to win in overtime. So I was hoping Singeltary would call 3 running plays and punt. That would take plenty of time off the clock and hopefully make Seattle use their 2 timeouts. But instead, the 9ers called plays that you only call if you are behind, not tied. And we lost. Because we gave Seattle time. I hope the majority of fans are as baffled as me. This is the first time I have been frustrated with out team.

They should have thrown flags almost every play for too many men on the field. All those paid off zebras on the field. Terrible when you can’t get pass interference when defensive player spins around a reciever on 4th and goal. They still had their chances. Too many dropped passes.
By rick on Dec 6, 2009 | Reply
Who the hell is calling the plays? 3rd and 3 and instead of running it and at least let the clock run, we throw a deep ball. Come on, are we trying to give the game away? Just awful! Amateur time! I could have managed the game better myself! We better work on these last minute meltdowns or we won’t get anywhere. Our quarterback is finally looking like a winner now let’s give him a chance to win. Time management!!! There was no reason we shouldn’t have won that game or at least sent it to overtime! Let’s get with it!

All I want for Christmas is a quarterback for the 49ers. Smith keeps being inconsistent. Even when he threw those great passes he threw behind or high and the receivers had to really reach out and get the ball.
Then we have butter-hands Gore who does this every year (great running back though).
And then there was the “greatest” team of refs out there who called out the game… the cold air must have frozen their eyes and brains.
Anyway, we shouldn’t be in the playoffs if we can’t beat Seattle by 10-15 points, at least… we’d be owned by the opponent.
Another dissapointing year is unfolding.

vernon droppring a td.. when it counted.
gore loosing the ball..
all these stupid bone head plays.. at critical times.
Smith did what he had to do.. played extremely well.. the coach and bone head teammates let him down.

I can’t believe this. Niners had a shot to go to playoffs, but now honestly i’m very disappointed. they needed a win today, and dumb mistakes got us a lose. What was all that playing around trying to throw back the football at the 10 yard line on the punt return, which resulted in a fumble. Stop playing little games and play some real football. Grab the ball and run with it, instead of throwing the ball around between each other and making dumb mistakes. get your act together. Now we need to wish for a loose of Arizona, and Niners to go undefeated from here and on. i doubt that, i’m a hardcore Niner fan but lets be realistic.

can’t put everything on the refs, eventhough they fudged it
dumb punt reversal fumble play sucked the air out…took away the momentum. that’s on bad coaching.. and 3 time outs.. used up in 1st qtr..

I will put it as clear as possible… 49ers SUCK!!!!!! I cant even believe that we were even thinking playoffs. This is just another dissapointment. I am actually glad we lost. Because if we somehow (with a miracle) made it in the playoffs we would get embarrased!!!! Cant beat Seattle!! are you kidding me? I hope the 49er players read this blog. The only good thing about this season is the fact that it is over for us. Hope we lose out so we can get better draft picks that will hold out on us. Wait til we play arizona and Philly.. what a disaster those games will be. We probably will even lose to The lions and the rams. Watching this team makes me sick. Here is our top 10 list on why we suck so bad
1) offensive line is horrible
2) Other than VD there are no playmakers
3) coaching is all over the place this year
4) defense cant stop anyone
5) no plays what so ever on special teams
6) Quarterbacks dont know how to win
7) Mostly ZERO pass rush
8) There is Zero emotion on this team
9) Cant hold onto the ball
10) Cant force turnovers
Hope the 9ers enjoy a long offseason

Singeltary is just a name. We have so much talent on this team and still cant have a winning season. So for me that falls back on the coach. Love how Singeltary pretty much assured a winning and special season. But that was back when we had a winning record. So so so….. PISSED!!

The 12th man in Seattle is the Fans, the 13th man is the Referee – these refs seems like they are targetting the Niners almost every week (except for last week) + receivers not catching good throws by Smith + bad play calling during clutch time = no hope for playoffs. At least Alex Smith is looking like the guy now.

ounce again niners failed to convert on first downs and spread out the offense, running game was terrible, i still dont understand y they continue to try to run up the middle unstead of pitching out to the side and get some running room. Also Clements being out killed our defense in the backfield. Nice try niners, but better luck next year.

Well well. I don´t have word again, the niners broke my heart. Next week, next week is the same words that we listen from players and coaches. But we have to wait all the fans for the next season, today we lost against a bad team can´t you believed???. It was the last chance for the niners tho reach maybe the cardinals, more lucky for next year.
I only have this recommendation I expect darling fans that you´re agree with me. In the enxt draft I hope that the niners choose these player that will lead us to playoffs.
1.- Sam Bradford. A great weapon, great accuracy, great power.
2. Golden Tate. This player from Notre Dame is amazing, he can play as a receiver and as a runner.
3.- And the other player from Nebraska whos last name is Shu.
Well go ahead niners and keep going.

Nothing fake about 38 years as a season ticket holder………it is what it is.
This is a team with a motivational coaching staff, but not necessarily a very smart one. They have to work with what they have, but clearly they make as many mistakes on the sidelines as the players do on the field. Have you ever seen a team so unprepared that they needed to call all three time outs in the 1st QTR…….embarrassing.
By Mike Smiley on Dec 6, 2009 | Reply
Amazing how some of you just dont get it. The defense was great. It amazes me to hear those that think the defense is the problem. The offense dropped about 8 passes, the play calling was horrible, especially considering they were something like 1 of 13 on 3rd down!! This team has a top 10 defense. Whats holding them back is a lack of an offensive identity, and an incompetent offensive coordinator. They were one fluke play away from being 4-0 with a conservative game plan. So what do the genious offensice coaches do?? They bench the qb, and completely change the offense! Why not make a tweak here and there, why try to completely fix something thats not totally broken??? It absolutely defies logic. 3rd and goal on the 1, they dont use the fullback. Same on 4th and 1. Just absolutely unbelievable. Jimmy Raye isnt good enough to run a High School program. Hats off to Manusky once again, great job.

Smith played a good game I thought. Some poor play calling by the coaches, reverse fumble and 3rd and 3 with 40 sec and two time outs left, then throughing deep is not a good call in that situation. The real reason they lost was Vernon Davis droping passes as usual. Pro bowl tight ends do not drop those passes especialy in criticle situations. Also Gore seems to fumble the ball at the worst times. Can’t win games with those mistakes. Not to mention may others mistakes that all add up to a sad performance. These kind of losses against a below average team is not only disapointing but makes me want to puke………..
By Bill on Dec 6, 2009 | Reply
Smith is coming along well. He played well enough to win, so lay off the guy! This loss lands 50% on the players and 50% on the coaches. The fumble on the punt return (no excuse), Gore’s Fumble (no excuse). Giving the ball back to the Seahawks so they can kick a game winner (no excuse) Bad play calling (no excuse). The niners are getting better. The coaches need to learn from these loses or hang it up! and as far as the players are concerned the team will continue to add talent, but for now hold on to the damn ball!

Now eat your peas and get with the program! Don’t wait until they add the carrot heads. Because, the carrot heads are going to ruin it for us.
I suggest a punishment for fumbles and drops: players should be outfitted with pink patches on their uniforms. Nobody wants a bunch of pink patches on their spit n’ shine uniforms right?

I like the guts to go for it early in the game, but hind sight is 20/20. We all knew this was going to be a low scoring game, yet they went for the 1st down instead of the points. Please take the points when they;re given to you. Keep pressure on the QB and see what happpens, good things, Hassleback on his back and fumbles can turn the game around. VD hang on to the ball, and when you need three yards, don’t go for 30. Bad play calling won’t help you win.
By Natefan on Dec 7, 2009 | Reply
I noticed that frustrated fan’s comment above, “We don’t have whatever it is.” I think we do, but why’s he receiving catches on the practice squad? Okay, if the season is over, let’s experiment and really figure out what’s highest priority in next year’s draft. Note Nate’s poise and accuracy, his ability to scramble out of a heavy rush, ready to sidestep and scramble in either direction. I heard a commentator say that Alex had his best game today. I saw inaccuracy. His best game is not enough. He’ll always be the deer in the headlights. You can’t change his nature. Let’s give Nate a 4th quarter chance to see if we already have the quarterback we need and use the draft for many of the other needed areas. Those that see parallels with the Deburg/Montana transition will be heard more and more as our two practicing quarterbacks continue to show their mediocrity.

wow, only morons would put this season on Smith. He is in the top five in Red Zone Passing, he has over 1300 yds and 13 TD’s in 4 1/2 games. If our wideouts could catch a damn pass he might have thrown for 400 yds today and atleast 3 TD’s the Walker drop, the Davis dropsssss, D- we need to play bump coverage, it would also help our pressure on the QB when recievers can’t get their routs. Run the ball more, a balanced attack = wins, our play calling is rediculous either run, run, run. or pass, pass, pass. i’m pretty sure you can call both on the same drive. Gore is the man, we took our best weapon out of the game, don’t really fault him that much for trying to make a p\lay when he finally gets the ball. Stop dogging Battle, the fumble was on Jones. Battle needs to be in at WO more, he makes plays. we still got a shot this year go 9ers

By SM in TX on Dec 7, 2009 | Reply
There are two problems as I see it. The first is the pass defense. It does no good to stop the run for two downs when your defense can’t stop a pass longer than 7 yds. Who cares if you have a great run defense if you just play the other team into your defense’s weakness?
The second thing is that we have horrible play calling. Why on 3rd and 3 would you call a long pass? And when we are 3rd and 7 or more we thing a screen or quick WR Lateral pass is going to get us the first down? I’d like to see the percentage of how many 3rd and 7 (or longer) we had where a screen or WR Lat pass got us the first down. It’s got to be close to zero!!

Next year they should snag Charlie Weis as an OC he runs a balanced offense but the Niners front office is not as aggressive as it used to be! They gone in a strange direction. They have the talented football team but they make to many mistakes that are killing themselves and Sing. does not know how to fix it? Defense is good and will get better but i wish the Organization would hire a proven winner as a coach there are many out there for the pickings and not go on a feeling or a shot in the dark coach. Sing. is a great player but players don’t always make good coaches. Chicago was average for years other than the distant super bowl they won.
I feel like Santa Claus Misfit toys, well maybe next year!
By Les on Dec 7, 2009 | Reply
How may years since we had a defensive end with pass rush ability? Offensive line is just that “offensive”. No quarterback or runner will succeed with this group of linemen. Butter fingers at crunch time. Don’t blame refs blame your team. Our secondary is horrible. Im tire of hearing the “young team” excuse. Its been over ten years. The old niners did it (super bowl) with 1st and 2nd yr guys who had talent. Lott, Wright, Montana, etc. Why should next year be differnt. Watching other good teams really shows how the Niners can’t match up at each position.

Whining Crybaby fans! You pee and moan that they run too much. Now you pee and moan that they pass too much. Get real! Any smart football person knows that this team is at least a couple of years away.
They’ve got some talent, but are still a few “pieces” away. And don’t forget, they have a rookie coach. He may be a great “motivational speaker” but he still makes rookie mistakes.
Stop calling for everyones head on a platter and give this team some time to grow and fill in the missing pieces. They probably won’t make the playoffs in ’10 either, but watch out in ’11. Just my prediction.

So dissapointed in this game, as much as any individual player I feel the coaches lost this one. This is not the CFL or NCAA, reverse punt handoff’s from your own 15 DO NOT WORK. Than at the end of the game its about 3 and 3 and you run a deep pass play over running the ball with gore to kill the clock and send the game into OT? Terrible playcalling, Gore destroys this team on the ground in the first game and now all of a sudden Alex Smith is the new Joe Montana and we can’t run the ball anymore. Makes zero sense, I love to see them changing the offense but Frank is our BEST player, we need to give him the ball behind Nolan Morris. Defense kept us in the game after being pinned next to the goal the entire second half. Vernon Davis has improved but if he wants to be the captain and the leader of this team he has a LONG way to go still. That drop in the endzone may very well have cost us the game, he also had a dropped td pass in the first half along with a few other dropped passes. The only high point offensively was alex smith’s play. WR’s dropped way too many passes. Completely unacceptable and that was a HUGE game that may now cause us to miss the playoffs.

Mike,a top 10 defense really? Are you kidding me?We cant stop the pass.We can stop the run all day long, but that doesn’t do squat if we cant defend against the pass. The only player on the secondary who is worth keeping is Spencer. We are paying big money to Clements who was suppose to be our lock down corner.I know he is hurt but he wasn,t playing all that great before the injury. You can pick any game you want to out of the season and we were burned in the secondary. Our D line is outstanding and P-Will is the man,but the secondary is hurtn for certain.
So you say I don’t get !!!!! I got it all season. An emotional roller coaster with all of the other fans.
I know what happened yesterday I watched the game.Dropped passes by Davis,Crabtree,a horrible punt return fumble, poor clock management,Gore fumble, bad officials.

To all those screaming for another QB- THAT ISN’T THE PROBLEM!! What we have is a disjointed team in general, from years of coaching and personnel changes along with salary cap and owner issues. I honestly didn’t think this would be the year, thought just like everyone else I was hoping. BILL WALSH was 2-14 and 6-10 respectively in his first two years. Am I the only one who remembers that??
They were a lot worse in previous years, and Alex is starting to find his groove after missing an entire season and going through a new OC every damn year. Give him a break. How is a 300+ yard effort with no picks a sign you need a new QB?? Sheesh.
The team WILL gel. Coach Singletary is the right leader. Enough with all the knee jerk responses. Next year WILL be much different if this team is allowed to stay intact and work together for the rest of this year and the offseason. Hang in there Niners fans. The good stuff is coming….

Gore crushed the Seahawks with over 200 yards earlier in the season and he get’s just 9 carries in this loss?
It’s like Mike Martz forgetting he had Marshall Faulk in the backfield.
It’s such a simple game, you really have to laugh when coaches think that their personal genius will do more to win a game than utilizing the talent they have on the field. It’s like having an architect draw up blue prints to make a freaking doughnut.
And no, I’ve never complained that any football team runs the ball to much…

Just give this team a couple of more years. I have heard that since the salary cap issues and its been 10 yrs since they were a force to deal with. Why do other teams go from worse to first but not this group? No; they seem to get players that don’t develop until they move on. Hmm. Except for Gore, Willis, Crabtree, and Staley we dont have much. Other teams have a roster full of these type of studs. We need more than a bilge pump with the size of the holes in this boat.

This game was a perfect example of a team that choked. I like Singletary as a coach and what he has done for this team, but he learned some hard lessons last week. 1) He talked about the playoffs when they have not earned a playoff spot yet … I was disappointed when he made those comments because it sets a bad example for the team. 2) Its OK to kick a field goal on the one yard line 3) Fire your special teams coach when he calls for a reverse on a kickoff return that gives up a td.

Let’s look at the game:
Smith: 27of 45 for 310 yards
Davis: 6 catches for 111 yards, and a franchise record-breaking 10th touchdown catch of the season
AND WE LOST!
Meanwhile in another lifetime we had:
Week 2
vs. seahawks: QB- Hill
Gore 207 yards rushing/ 39 receiving and the final score : 23-10!
Looks like certain individuals had a great game but we still lost! WE should have had Gore running like crazy but instead he was thrown into this “salvation-spawning” spread offense where he wasn’t as effective as he had been in previous VICTORIES over the seahawks!
Oh and just one more thing:
In the first 5 weeks we were 3-2 with Hill as QB, we brought in Smith and we are now 2-5??
How does this picture look any better?!
I am a Niner for life but I hate to say it once again: Playoffs…. Maybe next year!

If the refs hadn’t been paid off for this game, the final score would have been 24-13 49ers.
(Pass interference on 4th & goal…….that fumble that was recovered by the 49ers that was negated because the refs said they blew the whistle…that was bs because i pvr’d the game, listened twice and the whistle did not go until the niners had recovered the ball…..this drive was also a TD drive by seahawks)
Therefore, minus the payoff to the refs, 24-13 niners which is the appropriate score for the offensive stats put up by the 2 teams.

Ok, I’m sick of all you cry babies. Our team is great! What do you expect with all the QB and coaching changes? We need consistency in our leaders before we get it on the field.
Smith is a great QB. We have Morgan, Crabtree, and Davis as receivers. FRANK GORE as a RB. We just need a better O line (Joe can’t do everything).
Willis is the bomb. Not even mentioning how Spikes helps him out. Clements is a good veteran. Franklin makes our D line good. We really need some star safeties tho.
All in all, we have a great playoff team. We just need to let our roots dig in a bit so our tree can grow. DON’T FORGET! 2 first round picks!!!!!!! Our QB is good. We need to pick up linemen( since linemen control the game O and D), and some star secondary players.
I have faith and alwaays will. Mike Singletary is the best thing for this team. Just let him get some experience and he will shine.
So, if all you guys are gunna do is cry and bash our great team. Then why don’t you all go be Cardinals. Watch us woop them again! This time on MNF!

Why hasn’t anybody addressed our poor pass defense? The offensive line? Why did we release rossum? Why did we burn three time outs in the first quarter? Why did we pass in that last drive instead of run to burn more time off the clock?
How much money did the officials have on this game?
Is it August yet?
Can Arizona possibly lose four in row?
Can we win four in a row?
Can I get a refund on my season ticket if I think I have been BAMBOOZLED?
LOL

hey Al, very funny, i bet they wont put that on a billboard.
I have to agree with MARTIN
VERNON DAVIS DROPPED THE GAME WINNING TD PASS- WENT RIGHT THROUGH HIS HANDS IN HIS FACE AND HE’S TRYING TO SAY THAT HE DIDN’T SEE IT. VERY DISSAPOINTED IN HIM, EVEN THOUGH HE IS GOING TO THE PRO BOWL, HE WILL ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT DROP THAT COULD’VE GAVE THE 49ERS A BOOST FOR PLAYOFFS!
ALEX SMITH IS THE RIGHT QB FOR THE NINERS, THE RECIEVERS ARE THE ONES WHO ARE SUPPOSE TO WORK ON THEIR CATCHING.
WHO THE HECK IS NUMBER 20 SMITH. HE’S THE ONE WHO ALLOWED THAT ROOKIE RECEIVER TO CATCH THAT FINAL LONG PASS FROM HASSELBECK TO SET UP THE GAME WINNING FIELD GOAL.
THE DEFENSE SHOWED THAT THEY REALLY NEED WALT HARRIS & NATE CLEMENTS
BAD DECISION OF LETTING ROSSUM GO WHEN YOU DONT HAVE ANYBODY TO REPLACE HIM.
I WANT TO SEE WHAT JED YORK HAS TO SAY AFTER DEMANDING THAT LAST YEAR WAS THE LAST TIME OUR SEASON ENDED IN DECEMBER BUT I’M ALREADY THINKING ABOUT FREE AGENCY AND THE DRAFT.
BETTER LUCK NEXT YEAR!! QUICK TIP FOR SINGLETARY, DONT CHANGE COORDINATORS OR WE’LL BE IN THE SAME SITUATION.

We brought Smith in because we couldn’t score with Hill, we were on the verge of being shutout in consecutive games until Smith’s rally in Houston. Our coach’s just need to call a balanced game and we’ll win out and maybe squeek in the playoffs, History shows that the Cardinals struggle at the end of seasons, i believe they lost their last 5 games last year before their superbowl run.

I thought we were going to win at first, but When we converted on two 4th downs i was like thats a risk doesnt work always. should not have convereted those, atlest kick the field goal to stay safe that way we could still put points off the scoreboard. Gore was really good for the pass , the rush not too well it was like the Hawks knew where he was gonna run, that last play when gore got stuffed should of put Coffee in for him coz gore at that play was exhausted. Defense needs to step up aswell, even our corner backs and safetys got burned by those receivers. Niners please beat the Cards on monday night, Atleast if we beat them they will be elminated for playoff berth or another potential superbowl, so monday we have to be the spoilers. at the end of the season please draft o-line, Cb’s and a safety that way we could have more chances next season to be top pass defense n rush defense.
Torch those Cards Niners!!! 49erfaithful4life.

I totally agree with Keltom, The refs were paid. The hawks were holding on many plays and there were so many plays that we could of got them flagged for that would of gave us chances to score. Yes that was a Fumble to Keltom. I was firs exstatic when i saw our defenders got that ball from the fumble n running the other way i mean there was no one behind him, easy TD, but the refs said it was down or blew the whistle. Hawks you may celebrate your victory this year but us niner fans will have the celebration when we beat you guys twice for NFC west as 1 in the division.

As long as Alex is in there it is very hard to watch. 3rd down conversions 1 for 15!! Are you kidding. With Shaun we had a winning record, with Alex a losing record. Why does everyone keep talking up Alex??? Even the announcers are doing it?? Change the offense to suit Alex and he still loses. Why didn’t Singletary change the offense to suit Shaun??
TERRIBLE MANAGEMENT. What happened to last years’ Singletary????

Hey Jay, I hate to tell you but even if we beat the Cards on Monday they will still win the West and go on to the Playoffs. If you really think this Niner team is good enough at this point of the season to whip the Cards…I will sell you my beachfront condo in Kansas. The Niners all of a sudden stopped executing the fundamentals like catching a well thrown ball. Alligator arms wont win games (Crabs) Gore needs a hole to go through (O-line). Secondary sucks and pass rush in non existent. We barely get the play off without a delay of game. What up with that?
