Singletary Names Team Captains
Posted by on September 11, 2009 – 4:08 PM
When the 49ers take on the Arizona Cardinals this Sunday on the road, head coach Mike Singletary’s team will be led by the six team captains he announced on Friday.
Linebackers Patrick Willis and Takeo Spikes along with defensive end Justin Smith, running back Michael Robinson, center Eric Heitmann, and tight end Vernon Davis will serve as the 49ers team captains for the ’09 season.
“Those six guys, to me, embody all of the things that we strive to be, in terms of the work ethic,” Singletary said. “Number one, these guys are always working, and they’re team guys striving to do all the little things that we need to do in order to be the best we can.”
Upon hearing the news, the chosen six were extremely honored to have been selected.
“It’s a big honor,” Spikes said. “ It’s big from the aspect that it’s my second year here and it comes this late in my career with another team. It’s something that I accept open handedly. It shows the respect factor not only that my peers have for me but for what the staff has for me.”

Now there is a fan for you…Bruce. Wow! I can personally see the transformation of what this team was under the foundation that Coach Nolan laid and what it is now with Singletary who is simply building on it with his brand.
For those six to be chosen by Coach Singletary says volumes about them as team players. They embody the essence of Coach Singletary’s philosophy: “We go in and hit people in the mouth!” He wants winners and here’s his!
Congratulations gentlemen! Well deserved and way to represent your team. You make me proud to be a fan of the greatest football franchise ever. Five for five!
Let’s make it six!!!!!!!
Go 49ers!!!!

the 49ers didnt show anything on d in the preseason and that was by design so teams wouldnt know what we were going to do. they r going to run different blitz packages against warner and the cards things they havent seen before…on offense we r going to play smashmouth run the ball straight at you with some passing plays we havent seen before .we will eventually get the cards tired on both sides of the ball……..49ers 27-cards 23

I cannot believe someone really wrote Cards 41 and Niners 10. Wow!! Are you serious. I am a realist. I foresee Niners winning 27 to Cards 10 or 17. Clements and Spence all day man. And true, its time to put either Robinson or Battle at QB. Preferably Robinson/ Give a heck of an option at the QB spot. They both did well at the position at their respective colleges PSU and Notre Dame……. So how bout that!!

Glad to see the Niners have gone back to more traditional uniforms. Thank god they got rid of those ugly glitzy uniforms from the loser Nolan era. If they play with half as much grit as coach Singletary has, they’ll be back in the playoffs where they belong. No mistakes on offense and rugged defense should bring them a “W” against the overconfident Cardinals. Should be a fun year!

yo bruce gotta realize first of all the niners always play the cards hard. Then you have to look at the cardinal team as a whole struggling through preseason. And then again you gotta look at the fact that… hell… your cardinals fan that sux man. You guys are kinda blown up and overated you had a great post season but you won 6 of your 9 games in our shitty nfc west conference. And honestly our oline and runnig game with the addition of glen coffee will not be stopped by your pussy airzona dline And then shuan hill’s gonna throw off the playaction to veron davis all day on your dome piece. I mean its gonna be close game but larry fitz is gonna be locked down and Boldin’s not 100%, lets hope beanie wells is as good as he was in college i mean hightower is pretty bad haha. But honestly you guys made it to the super bowl last year… congrats seriously. I’m happy you got to expierence that but to bad the steelers won. Of course being a niners fan i don’t have to worry bout that cause we don’t lose superbowls. Hey maybe you guys will win one in the next few years, it’ll end the 6 decade drought haha. Its gonna be niners 17 cards 14

Make no mistake. This will be a tough game, but the 49ers will prevail. Why? Because nobody in the NFL will be TOUGHER than the Niners. Some will be flashier, but none will have the guts of the Niners. Watch and learn, naysayers…

NFL captians are strictly ceremonial, used to reward or motivate individual players. Whether or not he has a “C” on his chest, Patrick Willis is the best player on this team. Furthermore, without production from offensive non-captains SHill and FGore this team will not be good.

This will be a good match up and will be a good start for the crimmson and gold. I personaly havent seen soo many all of a sudden Cards fans come out of the woodworks in like……ever!! but I will agree that even I was impressed on them geting to the big dance and was hoping that they would win it all, but they failed me like they will fail tomorow. The NINERS have greatly improoved the defence and secondary and our running game will be force to be rekoned with with gore, coffee, robinson running behind Norris. The passing game hasnt showed me mutch but I have no doubt Hill will do better than decent and I know when Crabtree does come to join the party it will help that offence jell and strart moving the ball more effectively……..the line 31-28 NINERS in a close one

Im a huge 9er fan and i have predictions….tomorrow afternoon 9ers hopefully win 20-16 late in the game. i think tomorrow the game will start out slow though for the 9ers. Also, through out the season the 9ers will struggle like any other re-building team and should and will probably bounce back under the strong foundation and strong minded Singletary. This year i believe the 9ers will start off 4-4 in the 1st 8 games and finish 6-2 giving them a 10-6 regular season record. No games will be a blow out but will be a grind out

The 49ers are going to show everyone what Mike didn’t wan’t to show in the preseason. Our kick a$$ “D” fence. with all the work outs and nut cracker drills this squad has seen, they are going to wear the offence down. Then here comes Gore, Davis, Morgan and Robinson putting it where the sun don’t shine. Last year the cards didn’t show much. They played teams that did’nt show up to the playoffs and got lucky the panthers totally dropped the ball. Watch and learn what this team will do. The so called upset of the week will head line ” 49ers take it over Cards “

wow…you have Issac Bruce a big time veteran and you have frank gore a top 5 rb in the league…and neither of them are captains?? what the heck?
By Anthony Bertolo on Sep 12, 2009 | Reply
Why does everyone want Hill switched out? It is almost like you all forgot how impressive his ratings were in the second half of the season last year. I know this would be off left but I bet you a Hill/Davis tag team all year would dominate.
Smith is a beast as well. The 49ers have the most talented pool of QB’s in the league. I guarantee Hill will be dominating the ratings this year. Playoffs for sure, question is, how far?

Looking forward to the season. Your making the moves,Singletary. It’s your first full season. We need to return to the days of winning and must do whatever it takes. I get this move for captains but lets see if it results in wins. Go NINERS, we are behind you.
By Rich7 on Sep 12, 2009 | Reply
The Niners have got to generate a pass rush if were going to beat the cards, also Clements, Spencer, and the rest of the DBs have got to bring their A game…were gonna have to force some turnovers too, but our D is capable and pumped. Also weve got to find a way to slow down the aggressiveness of the Cards front 7, they were blowing up a lot of our plays in the backfield last year. If we won the turnover battle, that would be huge too.
Gore should def be a captain, Crabtree is a selfish ass.
By Rich7 on Sep 12, 2009 | Reply
Hill does two things well, very important things, he gets rid of the ball and he makes solid reads. BUT he has no arm strength and not a ton of accuracy especially as he starts to throw down the field. Smith has the great arm, and a ton of accuracy- BUT holds on to the ball to long and throws into coverage making bad reads. Probably because hes never had the same offense two years in a row, nor no. 1 wideout, or consistent pass blocking in the first couple years. The niners really did him wrong, honestly. They should have let him sit and learn ONE offense for 2 – 3 years, like aaron rodgers did…look how good he is now, with less talent than smith. The Niners should play Hill now, and let Davis and Smith learn this offense for the next 2 years, then let them compete for the starting roll.

This has to be our Year to contend in the NFC WEST. C’mon! As the GREAT Genernal Patton of WWII said, ” If we are not Victorious, then let no one come back Alive.” Go NINERS!

Niner Nation, believe me, the only way we are coming out of Arizona with a victory, if the D-line steps up and puts WArner on his back, if not he’s going to pick us apart. Also the O-line must pass protect and not have shaun hill runnning for his life. Football is very simple, its won in the trenches. whom ever can control that part of the game than the rest is history. 49ers plz win the majority of those battles so Gore/coffee can run crazy, and shaun can find the recievers. The trenches, the trenches, win win win!!! Go Niners
